Powder coating in duplex system

The duplex system provides additional protection against corrosion. At ELEO, this consists of immersion cataphoresis (VCI) combined with powder coating. Parts treated using this process have a service life 1.2 to 2.5 times longer than the sum of each individual protection method.

Thanks to the duplex system, the most stressed parts benefit from additional protection. It is possible to combine colour preferences with optimal corrosion protection.

Sandblasting

To create a smooth surface free of dust, rust or burrs in preparation for optimal VCI surface treatment and powder coating, the parts are placed in a blasting unit suited to their size.
Depending on the blasting technique, ELEO uses angular steel shot (0.42–1.18 mm Ø) or round steel shot (0.08–1.2 mm Ø).

Immersion cathodic coating

VCI stands for ‘vaporised cathodic immersion coating’ and represents the perfect combination of corrosion protection, quality, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness.
VCI guarantees effective, durable corrosion protection that is resistant to scratches, gravel impact and salt water.

VCI surface sealing meets the highest standards in the automotive industry. Cathodic dip coating (VCI) uses electrochemical processes to apply a colour to the treated part. The basic physical principle of electrodeposition is that materials with opposite charges attract each other, creating excellent adhesion.

Before the treatment process, a direct current is created on the part, which is then immersed in a bath of varnish with oppositely charged particles. The varnish particles are attracted to the part and stick to it. This creates a uniform layer of varnish over the entire surface. Due to the electronic attraction, the adhesion of the varnish to the metal is extremely strong, and during immersion it penetrates into corners, edges, holes, convolutions and recesses until the specified layer thickness is reached and the part is perfectly insulated. The electrical attraction is then interrupted and the treatment process is complete.

To achieve maximum durability of the treatment, the varnish is cured in an oven at 180 degrees Celsius. Before VCI treatment, the parts are also zinc phosphated, which optimises the protective effect of the VCI treatment.
Zinc phosphating offers high corrosion resistance and provides better adhesion conditions for the subsequent surface treatment in the VCI bath.

Surfaces treated with VCI meet the best conditions for powder coating or conventional varnishing.

Powder coating

During powder coating, the surfaces of electrically conductive parts are treated with powder coating in an application device. There, the powder is applied to the parts and baked onto the surface at temperatures of up to 250°C.

Powder coatings are organic, thermosetting treatments with a solid content of 100%. Unlike other treatment technologies, powder coating does not require any solvents.

ELEO usually uses polyester powder in DB 703 colour with a micaceous iron effect. This colour combines an elegant, high-quality look with a flawless surface.

We can, of course, treat your products in any colour you wish. In principle, you can choose from all RAL colours.

Powder coating provides high-quality protection against corrosion, ensuring a long service life as well as an attractive finish. This is especially true when combined with VCI treatment.

Uses and benefits

Duplex or multi-layer systems are primarily recommended for outdoor use, which is why ELEO has made a conscious decision to use a duplex system, which offers the following advantages:

  • Functional and decorative
  • Attractive appearance, even after prolonged use
  • Significantly longer protection thanks to the synergy effect

Coated in Germany

At ELEO, all components are processed exclusively in Germany using a high-quality powder coating system for outdoor use from the MEGAPOL® brand, certified according to various DIN standards.

We also use a very high-quality product from the POWERCHRON® brand as an electrocoated epoxy varnish, which guarantees optimum protection against corrosion without the use of heavy metals.

We will be happy to send you the relevant technical data sheets on request.
